Goose’s Bar & Grill Announces Closure in Downtown Papillion
PAPILLION, Neb. — Goose’s Bar & Grill in downtown Papillion is preparing to close its doors, with owner Jon King sharing the news in an emotional Facebook Live video.
King explained that the decision ultimately came down to taking care of himself and the people closest to him, speaking openly about his mental health and his marriage as he discussed why it was time to step away from the restaurant.
For Goose’s, the announcement brings a relatively short but personal chapter in downtown Papillion to an end.
Located at 129 N. Washington Street, Goose’s is owned by Lisa King and Jon King, a retired combat veteran who served in both the Air Force and Army before becoming an entrepreneur.
The restaurant itself was built around family.
Goose’s was named in honor of Rich Schaudel, Lisa’s father, whom the family describes as a husband, father, grandfather, mentor, friend, Cornhusker and Kansas City Chiefs fan. The Kings created the restaurant as a tribute to him and to the Nebraska community they call home.
Since opening, Goose’s has served as a neighborhood gathering place for breakfast, burgers, drinks, sporting events and community gatherings.
King has also been open publicly about life beyond the restaurant. Earlier this year, he appeared on the 11BangGang podcast and discussed his military career, deployments to Afghanistan, the transition out of the military and the businesses and community organizations he has built since.
That background adds another layer to his decision to speak publicly about closing Goose’s rather than quietly shutting the doors.
In his Facebook Live announcement, King chose to tell customers directly why he was making the decision and acknowledged that continuing down the same path was no longer what was best for him or his family.
Now the community that gathered at Goose’s will have an opportunity to gather there one more time.
A Goose’s Closing Party has been announced on Facebook as the restaurant prepares to say goodbye to its customers and the downtown Papillion community.
